Those were exciting times—times I am sure now she chuckles about as she remembers returning home to find what I humorously call a “culinary battlefield.” Evidence of my culinary antics lay strewn about, and it was not uncommon for my mother to stumble upon bits of intricate dishes that went beyond our usual fare. Italian risottos, spicy Spanish paellas, and other adventurous recipes danced upon my palate, and family members who were lucky enough to sample my creations would often peer into the kitchen with curiosity. “Why don’t you cook for us more often, dear Jona?” my mother would ask, bemused.
